AGL and Work Inspirations – What an experience!

Last week I had the privilege of being part of a three day Work Inspirations program through AGL’s partnership with The Smith Family.

AGL hosted 12 students from Collingwood College at our Bourke Street office with the aim of inspiring the students and showing them what a work-place might look like for them in the future.

Myself and some 34 AGL people volunteered their time to mentor, share stories, give tours of various parts of our business and generally engage and inspire these young people.

The outcome was overwhelming! Feedback from employees and the students was so positive and a direct quote from the teacher is below:

“Our VCAL students are amongst our most dis-advantaged cohorts. The opportunity you provided has already had a profound effect with many of the students preconceived ideas about the work-place, employment opportunities and education having been reshaped by the experience. From the hesitant and shy students we saw on the Monday morning to the positive, motivated, talkative, future focused and hard working students we left with on Wednesday afternoon. I can only thank you.”

From an employee engagement perspective, you couldn’t put a price on how fulfilling it was for them to be able to provide practical support to people in the community who need that little bit of extra help. Here is what Mel Forbes, Lead P&C Business Partner (and primary lead for the program) had to say:

“It was humbling to hear our own people share their own stories of overcoming adversities to peruse their own career aspirations and it made me feel incredibly proud to be part of an organisation who has supported the career development of people whom are now in a position to inspire the next generation – some of whom may be our future recruits!”

Thank you AGL for supporting this amazing program that The Smith Family run for the young people of Australia. It was a soul enriching experience and I’m so proud to be working for an organisation that supports these activities.
