AGL supports making energy more affordable and simpler
AGL’s Managing Director and CEO, Andy Vesey was amongst the energy retailers who met with the Prime Minister in Canberra this week to discuss energy affordability and what can be done to simplify energy offers and ease the burden on household budgets.
Mr Vesey stressed the importance of increasing supply in the energy market to reduce price pressures, which is why AGL is investing in new generation and supports a Clean Energy Target.
AGL is also taking action to help customers access the best deal for them, particularly vulnerable customers through our A Fairer Way package which invites concession customers to get in touch to find a better energy plan for them. Our hardship customers are not charged fees for late payments, paper bills or over the counter payments and have access to financial counselling, debt relief and home energy visits.
Our Staying Connected program for hardship customers provides highly competitive offers, guaranteed discounts and personalised support.
Being able to compare energy offers was also the subject of discussion at the meeting and AGL agrees more can be done to make it easier to compare plans by standardising how plans are presented.
Another topic of discussion was what happens to customers on discounted plans when their contracts end. AGL either contacts residential customers with a new offer before the existing contract expires or extends the benefits on a new energy plan for a further term. It is not our practice to revert customers to higher priced “standing offers”.
While we are already implementing measures to help customers with energy costs, we know more action is needed and will work with government and industry on additional measures discussed at this week’s meeting.
