Reducing the horizons of uncertainty: Setting Australia’s post-2030 emission goal

Recently AGL refreshed our brand. A key element of our strategy is the plan to decarbonise our generation by 2050.

As our CEO, Andy Vesey highlighted “…the challenge for us is that we’re embarking on something incredibly complex but the communications environment demands a simple explanation. There isn’t one….”

However, despite this complexity, the importance of setting goal cannot be understated.

The Climate Institute and AGL have published a policy brief Reducing the horizons of uncertainty: Setting Australia’s post-2030 emission goal to highlight the important role a long term target can play to the development of durable climate policy in Australia.

Long-term targets can provide guidance for strategic policy and investment decisions, and build confidence in and certainty about the general direction of policy development. Over time this reduces the range of uncertainty associated with important long term investment decisions.

Under the Paris Agreement the Australian Government has agreed to report their 2050 emissions reduction plans by 2020 at the latest. Given this and the commitment to examine post-2030 targets under the 2017 climate change policy review, it seems opportune to address this key part of our commitment.
