AGL supports “Priscilla”, Australia’s first transgender icon
AGL was proud to support the 2016 Broken Heel Festival, which was held in Broken Hill in September.
The Festival, originally conceived to celebrate the 21st birthday of the iconic Australian movie Priscilla Queen of the Desert in 2015, celebrates diversity within the Silverton and Broken Hill communities.
The movie plot follows two gay men and a transgender woman as they journey across the bush from Sydney to Alice Springs via Broken Hill in a tour bus they have named “Priscilla”. The film was instrumental for its positive portrayal of gay and transgender people in Australian communities.
Doug Jackson, AGL Shine* Sponsor and Executive General Manager Group Operations, said “Priscilla helped Australians understand, for the first time, some of the challenges faced by the transgender community.”
“The fact that up to 50% of trans people have attempted suicide suggests these challenges are still very real for some members of this community.”
“AGL’s number one priority is ensuring all of our people feel safe and valued, which is why the Shine network is working on a program to support all of our transgender and gender diverse people to bring their true, authentic selves to work.”
AGL is a strong supporter of LGBTI people in regional areas. AGL currently operates the 53 MW Broken Hill Solar Farm, and is also developing the Silverton Wind Farm, which could provide up to 200 MW of renewable energy.
*AGL is committed to providing a supportive and inclusive environment for all of our employees. In response to our employees who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex (LGBTI) and employees who were looking for a way to support co-workers who identify as LGBTI, AGL established an employee network known as ‘AGL Shine’. AGL Shine exists to contribute to building further an inclusive and supportive workplace culture where LGBTI colleagues enjoy equal privilege to that of all AGL employees; are free to choose to share their life experiences in a safe environment, and are able to achieve their potential by contributing to AGL’s success.
