699 Bourke St glows orange in support of Victoria Against Violence

AGL’s 699 Bourke Street office joins other key landmarks around Melbourne lighting up orange from the 25th Nov – 10th Dec, as the first private company to lend support to Victoria Against Violence. The Victoria Against Violence campaign aligns with UN Say No – UNiTE to End Violence Against Women and 16 days of coordinated ‘Orange the World’ activities around the globe.

“Orange is a bright and optimistic colour, which represents a future free from violence against women and girls. That’s a future we want for our customers and employees,” says Andy Vesey, AGL Managing Director & CEO.

Other buildings and landmarks in Melbourne will also be lit up today and will maintain their orange glow until 10 December, including: the Arts Centre, the State Library, the National Gallery of Victoria, Federation Square, Government House, the Melbourne Star and AAMI Park.

AGL is proud to be part of the Victorian Government’s campaign to help raise awareness of what can be done to prevent family violence and acknowledges the tireless work of advocates, workers, counsellors and lawyers who have raised these issues publically and with businesses to drive change.

Further activities to support the initiative are underway including:

  • The AGL logo background will switch orange on social media to support the 16 days.
  • ‘Go Orange’ fundraisers are being held by employees dressing orange, with donations (and AGL matching funds) to go to The Salvation Army, one of our Energy For Life partner support services.

This comes after the development of AGL’s integrated domestic violence policy for customers and employees, which was developed in consultation with community groups and sector experts around Australia who support people experiencing domestic violence issues.

Our new customer policy includes:

  • Referring calls from customers raising family violence concerns to a specialist team trained in supporting vulnerable customers and having sensitive conversations.
  • Taking extra steps to protect account privacy, such as adding passwords.
  • Establishing payment plans, moratoriums or, where appropriate, applying debt relief.
  • Connecting customers with additional support services.
  • Establishing a hotline for family violence workers who may be supporting our customers, so they can dial directly through to our specialist team.

For employees, AGL’s domestic violence support policy also provides people experiencing family violence with an extra 10 days of leave to seek support, flexible work arrangements, and access to strictly confidential advice and support from counsellors who are trained on domestic violence issues through the Employee Assistance Program (EAP).

“We want to be a workplace and a business where people feel comfortable about raising these issues. Regardless if you’re an employee or a customer, you should know we are ready to stand by you and deliver necessary support,” says Andy.

Next steps for AGL will be to develop greater cross-referral links across industry and the community sector, and offering energy information sessions for community sector experts supporting impacted customers.
